Preparing Scrap Metal for the Recycling Yard

Recycling your scrap metal is one of the best things you can do for our environment – reusing scrap metal creates far less pollution than having to create all-new metal would, and it creates more ‘free’ space in our landfills. Here at M&M Recycling, we are always here to help you either answer questions about recycling scrap metal and how it works, or we are more than happy to help you recycle it!
Deciding to recycle your scrap metal is amazing, but there are some things you can and can’t do when it comes to recycling it. If you’ve never done this before and don’t know where to start, give M&M Recycling a call today and we’ll give you some tips for recycling your scrap metal.

5 tips for preparing scrap metal for the recycling yard:

1.    Make your safety a priority
When it comes to recycling scrap metal, there can be a lot of rough or sharp edges. No matter what size metals you’re recycling, moving it around can be dangerous. Before you get into this project, make sure you have a safety plan set up. For example, if someone gets cut from a piece of scrap metal, make sure you have a first aid kit on hand that has everything you would need to handle this situation. Always remember, safety first!

2.    Get the right equipment
While thick and durable safety gloves and clothing is necessary, you also want to make sure you have the proper tools on hand. You’ll want to have a standard tool kit on hand, but these are some other tools M&M Recycling recommends you have before you get to sorting:

  • Large magnet
  • Large metal cutter
  • Eyewear

Having these things before you start sorting will allow you to sort through your scrap metal easier. Some metals are more valuable than others, meaning they will have a stronger magnetic force – which will be easily detectable if you have a large magnet on hand.

3.    Location does matter
While sorting your scrap metal is a very important part of recycling it, finding the right location that will take everything you have is just as important. Some recycling yards will make you sort everything before bringing it in, or they will charge you by weight. Find a recycling yard that fits your needs best, and choose that one.

4.    Do your research
As we stated earlier, some metal is more valuable than others. Before bringing your scrap metal to a recycling yard, do some research on the types of metals you have so you know how much to expect from it. Weighting your scraps ahead of time and looking up the most current values on your different metals will help you come up with an estimate before you drop it off.

5.    Bring it yourself or hire us!
Now that you’ve sorted your scrap metal, you’ve chosen your recycling yard, and you’ve done some research on the value of your scrap, it’s time to get the job done. If you don’t have much to bring, you can easily bring it there yourself. If you’re recycling a large amount of scrap metal, you may need to hire out.
